In 2013, George Zimmerman went on trial for hunting and murdering Trayvon Martin.

I was deployed in Afghanistan as the news broke. Zimmerman's trial transformed into a public hanging of the innocent boy he murdered, another American insurgent was set free.

We were in Afghanistan to fight terror, but as more time passes, and more innocent black lives are taken at home while their murderers are set free... it becomes clear: the past half-century of war overseas has been designed to arm, enable, and legally protect the insurgency mustering at home.

This is how I see the banner under which I fought.
